Staff and customers at Otter Nurseries celebrated half a century in business this week with a nostalgic look back at the garden centre’s history.

Past and present customers were invited to bring photographs and memorabilia of the garden centre to an event on Monday.

It charted the growth of the business from its humble beginnings in 1964. Today its Ottery branch employs more than 250 staff.

Jacqui Taylor, managing director and daughter of founders Malcolm and Marilyn White, said: “To be able to say we’ve been around for 50 years and the business is still run by the family which started it is something to be really proud of in these days of takeovers and buyouts.

“We are so lucky that the people in Ottery and the surrounding areas all love their gardens and have supported the nursery so loyally for the past 50 years - and I hope we will still be growing strongly in another 50 years’ time.”
