Up to £8,000 in local authority grants could be on its way to improve youth facilities and tackle weeds in Sidmouth.
The money would be used to purchase new equipment for the centre in Manstone Lane and fund a tri-annual spruce-up of roads and pavements.
Last week, Sidmouth Town Council agreed to apply to the Parishes Together Fund – a pot of cash administered by the district and county councils – for help with the two projects.
Briefing town council colleagues on how the money would be spent at the youth centre, Councillor Dawn Manley said it could provide equipment for music, engineering and cooking-based activities.
She said: “The money would support the expansion in activities provided at the youth centre and to develop skills, confidence and employability of young people.”
Councillor Ian Barlow pitched a separate idea for keeping the town’s highways and paths free from weeds.
He said: “East Devon District Council used to spray the weeds, but that was stopped two years ago because of a lack of money.
“If we want our town to stand up and be different from other towns, I think it would be money well spent.”
Members agreed to apply for £5,000 for the youth centre, and £3,000 for weed clearing.
