POTHOLE ravaged roads in the Sidmouth area will be among those to benefit from more than �9million of repair money awarded to Devon County Council (DCC) .
The Government handout was this week welcomed by the authority.
DCC leader John Hart said: “Our road network suffered badly this winter during the prolonged severe cold spell with the worst snowfall for 30 years. Some of the effects of that damage are only just appearing now.
“As we have more miles of roads to maintain than any other authority in the country we welcome the allocation of this funding, which will enable us to continue our ongoing efforts to keep Devon’s roads as safe as we possibly can.”
He added DCC has already set aside more than �7million to be spent on pothole repairs for the coming financial year.
More than 200,000 potholes have been fixed on Devon’s roads since January last year – a record number and around five times more than the year before. Similar levels of repairs are expected to be needed this year. Last year DCC received �3.6million from Government, which was part of �11 million the council spent on repairing its 8,000 mile network.
