“A cafe too far” in Sidmouth?

PLANS to turn a Sidmouth shop into a tea room have been supported by civic leaders – despite being branded a “café too far” by one concerned representative.
Proposals to transform Shiver, in Dove Lane, into an outlet selling hot drinks, sandwiches and cakes won the backing of town councillors last week.
But a district ward member has voiced worries over the loss of another retail outlet.
Applicant Christopher Harris has asked East Devon District Council (EDDC) for permission for a change of use that will allow the shop – once a pub – to become a restaurant or café. The property is the former home to the controversial Dove Gaming premises. Outdoor sports store, Shiver, opened there in June 2010.
Mr Harris has revealed blueprints for a coffee and tea room that feature no external alterations, like installing extractor fans, as “no cooking will be involved” at the potential business.
District councillor Sheila Kerridge has voiced her objection to the bid and has told EDDC planning chiefs: “I think this is a cafe too far. I cannot believe anyone really wants to open another cafe in Sidmouth. We cannot let another retail outlet disappear. I strongly disagree with this application.”
Sidmouth Town Council Planning Committee members gave proposals their blessing when they discussed the project last Wednesday.
Councillor Simon Pollentine said the building had a “chequered history” and added: “I don’t have any huge problems about it. At least it keeps somebody in there and somebody in work. If they want to take a chance in the market place, like the rest of us, then I support it.”
Planning authority East Devon District Council (EDDC) had on Monday received two objections that stated there were too many cafes in the area.
EDDC planners will consider both the town council’s and Cllr Kerridge’s opinions before they decide the fate of plans.
