Standing up for the valley, safeguarding the town’s hospital and voting against the development of Knowle are among the elements of a Sidmouth charter drawn up by seven district council hopefuls.

The eight-point pledge reflects discussions between a wide range of independents contesting the district council elections.

At one point, as many as 15 people were considering standing in the Sidmouth parish.

The candidates have vowed to:

? Stand up for Sidmouth and the Sid Valley;

? Vote against all current plans to relocate from, sell or develop Knowle;

? Object to any development which threatens the green corridor between Sidford and Sidbury;

? Support a balanced community, including a thriving business sector and an effective voluntary sector;

? Work to address the issues at the eastern end of the seafront, especially cliff erosion, the beach management plan and the future of Port Royal;

? Ensure the needs of people of all ages are considered in development plans for Sidmouth;

? Consider new ways to boost our tourist economy whilst remaining sensitive to the special character of our town;

? Fight to retain Sidmouth Victoria Hospital for local inpatients in any present or future reorganisation of health services in East Devon.

John Dyson and David Barratt said they admire the achievements of the East Devon Alliance, but have always preferred to remain totally independent.

“I have found there is little difference between my views and those of the EDA,” said Mr Dyson.

“We have therefore put together a charter for the town.

“We aim to provide the best way for Sidmouth.”
