"HILLS" Garden Room (kindly lent for the occasion by Miss Leigh-Browne) was crowded out on Monday afternoon when the residents of Salcombe Regis assembled en masse for the purpose of protesting against the new rating assessments of the parish. Following on the issue of the reassessment list, with its substantial increases and glaring inequalities, Mr F J Potbury has energetically taken up the cudgels on behalf of his fellow ratepayers, and with force and sincerity he admirably voiced their views.

THE SIDMOUTH branch of the British Legion held their Annual Supper at the Anchor Hotel on Tuesday evening. The chair was taken by Brig-Gen Maclean, and those supporting him were Col Gilchrist, Col Clark, Major Alston, Capt Archer, Revd Wilson, Paymaster Capt Haynes, Mr G R G Bell and others.

IF the young people of the town are to have any future here, Sidmouth must avoid becoming an old man's paradise, but a young man's graveyard, said Mr. F.A.C. Pinney, opening a series of discussions on the future for youth in Sidmouth, at the Round Table meeting on Wednesday. The members are considering changes since pre-war and seeking to study the problem facing the youths leaving school who have difficulty in finding a satisfactory career in Sidmouth.

LOOSENED by the continued heavy rains, a sizeable hawthorn tree fell right across the steps leading from the Alma Bridge to the Salcombe cliffs on Thursday afternoon, only the handrail preventing it falling on to the path below.

A SHADOW cast over a Sidmouth family by the news that the killer disease leukaemia had struck their 14-year-old son lifted this week as he showed signs of improvement in response to a big display of compassion by the community. David Taylor was allowed back to his home at High Meadow on Friday last week after being in hospital since the Wednesday after Christmas.

ALL children's play areas in East Devon could soon be fenced off in a bid to stop them being fouled by dogs. East Devon District Council's Amenities committee on Tuesday instructed officers to prepare a report on the cost of such a scheme. Sidmouth Town Council wrote to the district council expressing its concern at the problem.
