NEWTON Poppleford’s free School Lane car park could become a pay-and-display facility to deter commuters who “abuse” it.
That is a suggestion made by district council bosses carrying out a region-wide review.
A council report on the 33-space site says: “We are advised by the parish council that the car park is, in the main, used by commuters who park all day and get busses to their workplace. This blocks up the car park for those who might otherwise like to use it.
“The ideal scenario for the parish council would be for the district council to set up the car park as a pay and display facility and then transfer them the freehold title at no charge.
“It would be anticipated it would be run as a short stay car park and an annual permit created specifically for Newton Poppleford.”
