The Sid Valley Horticultural Society has published its schedule for the annual gardening and craft show early this year. The move will help gardeners decide what flowers, fruit and vegetables to concentrate on for the society's special 80th anniversary show, which will be held at Sidford sports field on Saturday, August 16.Chairman Maureen Britton heeded comments made after last year's event, which, despite the downpour, successfully transferred to a Saturday from midweek. To mark its 80th year, the society has bought an anniversary cup which will be presented for the first time to the overall winner of two new categories, a miniature garden class for adults and a planted container of three types of cacti and/or succulents."Last year Val Parkinson, who entered the show, donated a baby shawl she knitted. We sold it and bought the anniversary cup with the money," said Mrs Britton.Pupils from Sidmouth's two infant schools, pre-schools and Sidbury Primary School, will be entering the children's section and WI members have lots of classes to compete in for the WI Challenge Trophy. There are also sections for wines, cakes, handicrafts, art and photography.Schedules have been designed and printed by Tracy Aplin of Sidford Post Office, which is one of three outlets they are available from. The others are Drews of Sidbury and Whoops a Daisy, Sidmouth. All entry forms must be returned to any of these by 5pm on Monday, August 11.
