DRAMATIC scenes unfolded at Sidmouth College last week as the air ambulance was called to the school after a student injured his neck.
A concerned teacher rang for an ambulance last Friday after it was feared a 14-year-old boy had seriously injured his neck in a PE lesson.
The boy had been taking part in a gymnastics class and hurt his neck when, reports indicate, he attempted a forward roll.
Jeremy Edwards, Headteacher of Sidmouth College, said: "There was an accident during a PE lesson and as a precautionary measure we rang for an ambulance.
"It turned out the air ambulance was free so they sent that along.
"The children found it quite dramatic as the helicopter landed on our site."
The pupil was taken to Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital but, after undergoing tests, was allowed home on the same day.
A South Western Ambulance spokesperson said: "We received a call at 11am from the school. A total of three vehicles attended the scene including the air ambulance.
"On arrival paramedics found the boy to be conscious and breathing and he was taken to hospital."
Mr Edwards added: "I am pleased to say the young person involved was released almost immediately from hospital.
