Classic Ackbourn comedy of misunderstandings, set in the Swinging Sixties
A classic Alan Aykbourn comedy is the latest performance to feature in the Sidmouth Summer Play Festival.
Relatively Speaking captures the mood and morals of the Swinging Sixties, and centres on the misunderstandings and identity confusion that result after a suspicious boyfriend secretly follows his girlfriend when she says she is visiting her parents. He manages to arrive ahead of her at what he believes to be her parents’ house, and the rest of the play sustains this misconception, to great comic effect.
Relatively Speaking was Ayckbourn’s first big West End hit and the Sidmouth Summer Season producer, Paul Taylor Mills, believes it will go down well with the local audience: “Last year’s Absent Friends was a big success for us and I am confident that Relatively Speaking will be a crowd pleaser too.” The play runs at the Manor Pavilion Theatre until Wednesday July 18, except Sunday, with performances starting at 8pm.
