Plans to erect a conservatory on the rear of a listed Sidmouth home have been refused due its ‘alien’ appearance.
The application for 16 Temple Street said the development would provide a ‘more useable’ garden space and have ‘no impact’ on the conservation area, as it would not be visible from the street.
Town councillors had questioned why the terrace of houses is listed and supported the application, subject to the support of the conservation officer.
But, refusing the application by delegated powers, East Devon District Council officers said the extension’s ‘unsympathetic’ form, design and materials would represent an ‘alien addition’ that would ‘fail to respect’ the traditional historic character and appearance of the listed building.
