Heavy rain is expected across Devon this evening and tomorrow morning.

Devon has been put on an amber warning this evening by the Met Office in anticipation of heavy downpours.

Experts have put the warning in place between 4pm today (Thursday) and 6am tomorrow.

Early afternoon thunderstorms are expected to become slow-moving and merge together to produce some larger and more persistent areas of thunderstorms. Up to 40mm of rain could fall over the course of an hour, with experts saying between 60 and 80mm could fall in a two to three hour period in some areas.

Frequent lightning and large hail are also possible.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

Travel could be affected in areas where flooding or lightning strikes occur and motorists are advised of possible difficult conditions due to flood water.

Power cuts may also occur.
