There was an exciting finish to this year’s handicap singles competition at Sidford Short Mat Bowls Club as Tony Lavers ousted defending champion Andy Thompson.

Andy looked to be cruising to a second successive victory when he opened up a 6-2 lead with three ends to play, but a gutsy performance from Tony saw him claw back the deficit to leave the scores going into the final end.

And he completed a remarkable turnaround, winning 8-6 with four excellent bowls to finish off the tournament.

Founder member Betty Smith, pictured, congratulated the finalists on a great contest and presented them with their trophies.

The club is looking for new members, and meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2pm until 4pm. Anyone interested should call 016395 579678 for details.
