A POSTAL strike could see angry Sidmouth Carnival prize-winners still waiting to receive their cash- nearly a month after the event.

A "hold-up" in signing cheques has been blamed for the delay, which could now be exacerbated as postal workers went on strike yesterday.

Frustrated Honiton dad Peter Greenslade saw his family's 'Benny's Bangers' entry scoop third prize in the youth section during last month's festivities, but is yet to receive the 60 prize money he wants to donate to local majorettes.

"This is the first time we have entered Sidmouth Carnival, and after this we won't go again," said Mr Greenslade.

"I've spoken to other winners and they haven't received anything yet either.

"We entered for the fun of it, but all our money goes to the Honiton Twirl Stars. We have won prizes at other carnivals and they have all paid up.

"For me this is just something for my boys to do but we want to give the money to our majorettes, it all adds up and makes a big difference to them."

This year's procession organiser Rob Waller said that while he is not involved with administrative duties, the cheques have been put in the post.

He said:"They have all gone out, I have been assured they were sent out second class on Monday. The postal strike and its back log might now cause a problem.

"The cheques needed to be double signed and I believe there was a hold up. Yes it is unacceptable but t think in this case it was genuinely unavoidable.
