The former Shadow Health Secretary spoke to an audience of more than 90 people at an author talk organised by the Friends of Ottery Library (FOOL) at the Institute.

The politician, who is a huge supporter of libraries, was talking about her latest book Strictly Ann.

She said: “The only way they are going to survive is if we support them; libraries have to move with the times, they have to have the technology.

“There is no good reason they cannot survive.”

Paul Barltett, mayor of Ottery, welcomed Ann on the day.

Tricia Doherty, from FOOL, said the group helped to raise money for the library and hoped to run more events like this in the future.

She said:“Ann lives in Devon and is a great supporter of libraries, I do not think it was a difficult decision for her to come here to see us.”
