Appeal is right on the button for African kids

PUBLISHED: 11:05 05 April 2013 | UPDATED: 11:05 05 April 2013

THESE African children have been boosted by an appeal for buttons to help them learn arithmetic.

The Herald reported last week how Sidmouth’s Save The Children shop collected around 18,300 of the items thanks to a bumper response to a public appeal.

“The buttons have been sorted into colours and sent to Trade Aid, a small UK charity operating in Southern Tanzania,” said the shop’s Kim Wells.

“Its aim is to create sustainable employment by providing opportunities for work and encouraging enterprise in the local area and through the teaching of English and vocational skills.

“The buttons will be very valuable to local dressmakers and the schools will use them to help with arithmetic.”
