ARMY cadets from Sidmouth spent last weekend helping at the South West Airfields Heritage Trust’s air and classic car event.

Members of the Sidmouth Detachment Devon Army Cadet Force headed to Smeatharpe Airfield to help at the event, celebrating the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Poor weather meant wartime aircraft including a Dakota and Spitfire couldn’t land, but the youngsters braved the elements to help with car parking and programme-selling.

They got a chance to look around the displays of military vehicles and equipment from the 1940s to the present day, and got a ride in the Army’s latest fighting vehicle.

The detachment took part in the arena display, demonstrating a casualty evacuation scenario, and a remembrance service honouring the service men and women who have died for this country over the years.

Sidmouth St John Ambulance members also attended.
