A PARAMEDIC was literally left holding the baby after a Sidford mum gave birth en route to hospital this month.

Adi and John Hurson's baby girl was born in the back of an ambulance parked outside of St Giles Church in Sidbury with the help of a paramedic who had never delivered a baby before.

The drama unfolded on May 7 in the early hours of the morning when Adi, 32, went into labour a day before she was due.

She said: "We were going to take ourselves into Honiton Hospital but it went from being nothing to full blown labour."

The pair, who already have two-year-old Gracie Lou, rang for an ambulance but only a short way into the journey to Honiton Hospital Adi knew they weren't going to make it.

She added: "My waters broke as the ambulance arrived and ten minutes later I was giving birth.

"John was following in his car and when he saw the ambulance stop he knew what was going on.

"I was really worried he would miss it so when he got in the ambulance I composed myself and then carried on."

Within minutes baby Daisy Tallulah, a healthy 8lb 1oz, was born.

"I was a little bit shocked but the birth was fine," said Adi, "I think if it had been my first baby it would've been a lot worse."

Proud dad John said: "When we had out first child she was so quick we were told we would end up having a home birth for our second- it was lucky just to get in the ambulance."

Adi added: "I was expecting a quick delivery but I thought I would have it at one place or another-not on the way!"

It was only after the relieved couple and their new addition were in hospital that the paramedic admitted it was the first time she had delivered a baby.

"She looked a little bit like a rabbit in headlights but I was concentrating on other things at the time," said Adi.

"She must have been as frightened as me but she was very calm."

The happy couple have decided to christen Daisy in St Giles Church in a fitting gesture to the place she was born.
