An additional 1,000 copies of a charity-boosting book - exploring Sidmouth’s maritime history - have been printed after the original run sold out in little over a month.

All I Ever Wanted charts the history of the Bagwell family through the eyes of fisherman Stan, who opened Sidmouth Trawlers in the 1960s.

Written by local author Christine Hardy, the book was complied to benefit the Fishermen’s Mission.

The charity provides financial and emotional support to fishermen and their families, and helped the Bagwells when their son, Ian, was lost at sea in 1998.

Profits from the first batch of books totalling £1,736 were donated to the charity this week.

Christine said: “We had no idea how many we would sell - we thought 500 would be enough but we sold those in about five weeks.

“I’ve had people who read it saying ‘I never knew my dad had a nickname’ or ‘I never knew my granddad was involved in that’.

“It has been a real Sidmouth community thing.

“It was a lot of work, but it was really worthwhile and some of the feedback from people has been heart-warming.”

Stan’s wife, Mary, said the family was extremely pleased that the book was selling so well and making money for charity.

She added: “We printed 500 to start with, and those all went quite quickly, so we decided to print another 1,000.

“We’ve covered all our costs now, so everything from now on will go to the Fishermen’s Mission.

“People have been buying them for Christmas presents - we’ve heard of them going out to Canada, the USA and a few went to New Zealand.

“It is about real people, and I think people want to read about real peoples’ lives. “

The book is on sale at Paragon Books in High Street and at Sidmouth Trawlers at the Ham.
