A fundraiser to help pay for a refurbishment in Sidbury Church will take place this weekend.

Proceeds from the barbecue, being held at Synderborough Farm between 1pm and 7pm on Sunday, will be split 50/50 between the landmark and Force Cancer Charity.

Organisers Monique and Stewart Pike want to raise money for the inside of the west tower at St Giles’ Church, which has become very run-down.

Monique said the cash raised from the day would be put towards the Church Building Fund to pay for the revamp, which would hopefully include a new kitchen.

She added they would also be looking at the possibility of getting some public toilets, either outside or inside the church, but that would be at a later date.

At the event, there will be a big marquee and a barbecue, as well as live music from local artists Ollie Harris and Clara Bond.

Monique said: “Half of the money will go to St Giles’ Church, which is in the heart of the Sidbury village community and would benefit greatly from modern facilities, promoting church concerts, school activities and other events in the church hall.”

She added that, because the church is a Grade I listed building, it would cost money to even have someone look at it - so fundraisers did not yet know how much a refurbishment would cost.

Monique said they had also decided to raise money for Force because recently a lot of their friends and people who they knew had been diagnosed with cancer or had been affected by it.

She added: “We feel Force is a local charity that gives tremendous support in that field.

“It is a really good and worth-while charity supporting cancer sufferers in this area and we hope everyone will come along and be very supportive of the event.

“We would feel very proud if we could raise money for such a wonderful cause.

“I hope people all ages will come along.”

Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for children.
