BEER Club has been unsuccessful in its bid to win a makeover worth 10,000.

The club had been shortlisted as one of nine projects in the running for the cash windfall in UKTV's Transforming the Nation contest.

Despite major local support when voting opened to the public in April, the coveted prize went to Acorns Children's Hospice in Walsall.

Dave Hutchings, club chairman, said: "We had a good try. We were up against very strong opposition and very worthy causes - the winner was very deserving."

He thanked everyone who voted for the club and those who went above and beyond the call of duty such as the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, which rallied up support across the region.

The club also received plenty of support from villagers and sixth formers at Colyton Grammar School.

The setback has done nothing to dampen the determination of the club's committee which is steaming ahead with the revamp and rebranding of the building.

Builder Kelvin Llewellyn has already refurbished the family part of the club and plans to transform the rest of the building are going well.

More events are being planned over the next few months including a member's night, the second Beer Festival and club week.

The club has done a u-turn in the last year after financial worries forced committee members to consider selling the important asset.

Now it is welcoming more people than ever and Mr Hutchings said he is delighted that the club has turned a corner.

He also paid special thanks to club manager Ashley Stevens and committee member Natalie Gribble for their hard work.
