BELATED MAY KING AND QUEEN: Bertie and Jessica were chosen as the May King and Queen at Branscombe Primary at a ceremony postponed due to bad weather and held at the end of last month. They sat under a floral arbour decked out in red white and blue, in reference to the Diamond Jubilee.

WALL REPAIR: A request has been made for funding to repair a “crumbling” wall at Mariner’s Hall in Beer.

NEW GREEN SPACE AND PARKING: Discussions have begun about using West Underleys in Beer for car parking, and improving the Starre Bank area for community green space. The suggestions, made by Beer Parish Council, are subject to approval by East Devon District Council.

CONCRETE MUSHROOM: The top of a concrete mushroom was stolen from outside a residence near Branscombe beach and reported to police as missing on May 25.

THEFT: A couple staying in a bed and breakfast in Beer reported a quantity of cash missing from their room to the police on June 2.

SCHOOL UNION: Branscombe and Broadhembury primary schools have christened their new union the Jubilee Federation to recognise this year’s royal event. The partnership will come into effect in September.

THIRD TIME LUCKY: A day of outdoor activities for Branscombe school children to be led by National Trust rangers has been rescheduled for June 25 after being postponed twice.

COASTGUARD: Beer coastguards were alerted to a report from Sidmouth that a boat was in trouble last Wednesday. It turned out to be a Sidmouth Sailing Club rescue boat carrying out normal activities.

WEDDING: A brave couple reportedly held their nuptials in blustery conditions on Branscombe beach on Saturday, June 16.

CHURCH FUNDRAISING: St Winifred’s, in Branscombe, will be holding a fundraising concert starring “local artistes” on Saturday, July 21, followed by a church market for the same cause on Saturday, July 28.

BEER CAVING: Pupils from Beer Primary School recently returned from a caving expedition to Dartmoor’s Pixie’s Holt. While underground they saw the imprint of a bishop who was “blown up by King Henry VIII because he disobeyed orders” and crushed against the wall. The imprint still remains.
