A SCHEME to create a new path for cyclists and pedestrians in Beer could be split into two parts to speed up the project.

A SCHEME to create a new path for cyclists and pedestrians in Beer could be split into two parts to speed up the project.

The cyclepath, footpath and bridleway, which will run from the top of Old Beer Road to the top of Long Hill, has been a priority for Beer Parish Council for three years.

Devon County Council, which is responsible for highways, said the project would be included on its 2010/2011 budget but following funding cutbacks the scheme was axed.

However, Seaton Coastal county councillor Jim Knight is meeting with DCC's head of highways next week to try and push the project through this year.

Following a request from Beer Parish Council, Mr Knight will ask if the scheme can be split into two stages - the creation of the path, and then surfacing work carried out at a later date.

Mr Knight told the Herald that he believes this will be feasible as less money will be spent in one chunk.

He said: "I think it is a good idea to do this. We have less money that we thought we would. We will try and move this ahead without tarmacing but first we've got to buy the land off Clinton Devon Estates."

Mr Knight added that the improvement of road safety in this part of the village had already began with the creation of a nib - the narrowing of the entrance - at the top of Long Hill, and the path would be the next stage in this project.

Mike Green, district councillor and Beer parish councillor, said the stretch of road is "dangerous and unnerving" for pedestrians and cyclists, and the path would be a great addition to the village.

He added: "There are still a considerable number of people who walk from Seaton to Beer and we want to encourage this.
