BEER Film Society is to kick-start its third season with a street party Spectacular which will showcase the critically acclaimed film Hope and Glory.

The Second World War themed event will take place on Wednesday August 20 in the Mariners' Hall and is expected to follow the sell-out success of previous Spectaculars such as Casablanca hosted by the Society.

The street party fancy dress theme also features a cabaret, a talent contest, singing and of course, no street party would be complete without a few nibbles.

The film Hope and Glory, which will take the main slot of the evening, has close ties to a particular resident of Beer, Chris Gradwell, who organised the music for the film and worked closely with the world-renowned director John Boorman.

The musical combines many different forms of music from jazz to classical and is a light hearted take on people living in London when street parties were essential to wartime camaraderie during the blitz.

Mr Gradwell said: "The film showing will interest anyone who would like to hear about the history of London in wartime and the variety show will be a fun evening with lots of things going on."

The Society has recently been given a cash injection by the lottery fund and a brand new projector will be used to show Hope and Glory.

Tickets are £9.50 and can be bought from Beer Post Office. Doors open at 6.30pm for 7.00pm start.
