Beer fisherman film star!

A BEER fisherman will be appearing in an educational video which is to be distributed to all secondary schools in the South West region.

Kim Aplin, 44, of Fore Street, was filmed by an Exmouth Community College student on Beer Beach talking about the sustainability of fishing.

The video, called 'Think Deep', is a collaborative project between the college and Natural England.

It looks to bring the undersea world of the region to the classroom and will be taught to Key Stage 3 geography, science and citizenship students.

Kim, whose family has been fishing in the village for generations, said: "One student visited me and filmed me bringing in a store pot and bringing in some crabs and lobsters."

Although Kim didn't realise he would appear on a video, which will be watched by thousands of school children, he is happy to help educate pupils on the issue of the sustainability of fishing.

He added: "The student asked me questions about the long-term future of fishing and how it survives.

"I explained that we let the small crabs go so they have more chance to breed- it's not a factory.

"You have got to look after your future. It's not just take, take, take- there has to be some sort of stability. That is the main point I made when I was filmed and I hope it comes across."

The film, which is presented by three students, stars local celebrity chef Michael Caines and also features Exmouth mussel farmer Myles Blood Smyth and fishmonger Dave Kurley.

Through the discovery of local fishing practices, the main principals of sustainability are touched upon and the film provides real life examples of how fishing businesses are currently exhibiting best practice.

Its premier screening took place at Exmouth Community College on Wednesday but as Kim was working he was unable to attend

However he will soon receive his copy in the post which he can watch from the comfort of his own living room.
