Beer resident Brian hopes Christmas light display will raise cash for Devon Air Ambulance

FESTIVE lights on houses along a residential street in Beer have attracted visitors from all over East Devon.

The annual spectacle on Park Road, has been tradition amongst residents for several years, writes Hannah Worrall.

Christmas trees bedecked with twinkling lights, glowing snowmen and illuminated reindeer are among decorations enticing spectators to visit the road.

Resident, Dave Mutter, 60, who spent two days putting up his lights, said: “The lights make it look cosy and Christmassy. They add to the Christmas spirit.”

He said that people often drive down the street to look at the lights.

Brian Sanderson, 68, raised 230 for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust through his display last year, and hopes to raise funds for them again.

He said: “There are people that come from miles just to see them.

“We all live in this very rural area for which the air ambulance gives to the people of the region an exemplary service.”

Mr Sanderson said the Christmas lights were now a part of the village community, and that visitors to his road often donate generously.

He said: “It shows that people still want to come together and celebrate Christmas.”

The trust supports the 19-year-old Devon Air Ambulance service, and needs to raise 4.5 million a year to keep the two helicopters flying.

There are also impressive displays of Christmas lights on Clapp’s Lane and Underleys.
