A Beer entrepreneur is celebrating two decades of providing care and support on expeditions that have raised £92million for charity.

Mark Hannaford set up Across the Divide in 1997 to help organise charity treks and corporate challenges.

The logistics and expedition company provides medical staff on its projects and also works with its sister company, World Extreme Medicine, to train medical personnel to work in extreme environments such as areas of conflict.

To date, Across the Divide has helped to raise more than £92million for charity by assisting with small and national fundraisers, including Comic Relief and the Rickshaw Challenge for Children In Need.

The team has also provided medical support for CBS’s Survivor series and offered its services to Sir David Attenborough.

Mark said: “The last 20 years have been an incredible adventure for myself and for Across the Divide. We’re grateful to have been involved in some fantastic projects and worthy causes and have enjoyed it all immensely.

“Looking back, I am struck by the huge improvement in professionalism in the expedition and adventure industry, especially with reference to medical support. Before Across the Divide was founded, it was common for expeditions to have either no medical support or to have a volunteer medic with little experience of the environment.”

Just before Christmas, the company was chosen as logistics partner for the People’s Convoy, which took much-needed medical supplies to the Turkish-Syrian border, to hand over to local partners building a children’s hospital near Aleppo.

Above the Divide is looking for anyone who has participated in an expedition or course to send in their photos and memories on social media to mark the milestone.

David Weil, a long-term business partner to Across the Divide, said: “It has had a profound impact on the expedition and medicine communities in the UK, and the repeat custom of high-profile organisations is testament to the team’s expertise and professionalism.”
