Beer’s green-fingered residents scooped up six gongs at an award ceremony for South West in Bloom.

Ursula Makepeace, Chairman of the Beer Horticultural Society went to Newquay for two events to celebrate their achievements and pick up the awards on behalf of the group.

The village itself picked up a ‘Silver Gilt Certificate’, and four parts of Beer picked up awards in the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards section.

Beer Sailing Club were awarded lever four, ‘thriving’, the parish church a level three, ‘developing’, the Dolphin Hotel a level two, ‘improving’, and Charlie’s Yard a level one award, ‘establishing’.

An Ursula herself was given a special prize for her outstanding services to Britain in Bloom over the years, picking up the ‘Alf Crouch Memorial Award’.

She attended a VIP evening organised by Newquay Town Council on Wednesday, September 14, before the South West in Bloom Presentation of Awards the following night.

She said the VIP evening presented an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people and, in particular, to establish contacts with senior officials of the Britain in Bloom organisation.

She said the annual gardening competition provides a wonderful platform for putting Beer on the map on the horticultural front, and she expects Beer Horticultural Society to go from strength to strength, with the help of a senior ‘Britain in Boom’ judge later in the year.

But the society urgently needs new helpers to help out with looking after the village flowers.
