THE coffers of Beer Congregational Church's Raise the Roof campaign have swelled by 4,000 in only six weeks.
Successful fundraising events at the church last week plus donations from kind-hearted people means the campaign is edging closer to its 30,000 target.
As reported in the Herald, committee members hope to raise the money by September when work will begin on replacing the church's dilapidated roof.
The works will cost 50,000 but some 20,000 has already been saved.
The committee is encouraging as many people as possible to visit the church and Beer lace maker Sybil Anderson (pictured) demonstrated her craft to get people through the doors last week.
The church has also been decorated for the fishermen's Harvest of the Sea service in October.
Sylvia Aplin, church deacon, said: "We have decorated the church now because people visiting will be able to see it over the summer.
"We hope by getting people to have a look round the church they might like to donate to our roof fund."
The committee is 'selling' church slates at 5 a piece and every person who buys one will have their name added to a commemorative book. If you would like to donate, pop into the church.
