BEER’S youth hostel was able to thank local residents for their support and to show them what it has to offer when it threw open its doors on Sunday.

Beer YHA was one of 75 centres taking part in this year’s YHA Day, which raises awareness of the Youth Hostel Association.

“It went OK,” said YHA Beer manager Amy Bates. “We opened the doors at midday and ran until about 4pm.

“There weren’t hordes of people, but they got a flavour about what the YHA is about and a greater understanding of what we do for the local community.

“We had some WI ladies come in, so I was telling them about our monthly lunches.”

It was also a chance to reflect on what a good summer it’s been for the centre, which has shared in a £20million investment over the last six years.

“The summer has been amazing,” said Amy. “We’ve been really busy with British, Swiss and Germans through. It’s been a right mixture and one of our better years.”
