WALK to School Week beings on Monday (May 19) and primary school pupils around Devon are creating footprint-shaped artwork to enter a competition to mark the event.
Devon County Council is asking them to produce footprints with a theme based on the benefits of walking to school.
The top three designs for each month will feature in a calendar for the 2008/9 school year.
Best designers will receive £10 book tokens and the overall winner will get a £25 token.
The competition is being run by the DCC's school travel plan team and sponsored by its TravelWise campaign.
The theme of national Walk to School Week is Exploring the Environment through Noise and Sound.
Around 46,000 pupils regularly walk to and from school. The 151,000 kilometres driven daily in school runs around the county produces some 3,600 tons of CO2 a year and costs parents £5.8 million in fuel.
