Bicton College in Devon has won the EBLEX Most Progressive Flock Award for the Texel breed.

Organised through the Sheep Better Returns Programme, this award is presented to the performance recorded flock that has shown the most impressive improvement in genetic merit, over a 12- month period, within the breed.

When Phil Squire took over the management of the college sheep enterprises two years ago, he was determined to raise the key performance related traits within the purebred flock. He did this by recording the sheep to identify those with the best growth rates and carcase characteristics, and by buying a high index ram to serve the ewes.
