Sidmouth Garden Club’s autumn show described as “triumph” by show secretary John

DESPITE lack of water, the heat and a major flower show just beforehand, Sidmouth Garden Club’s Autumn Show last week was a “triumph”.

“The entries were a little bit down but the chrysanths and dahlias were out of this world, of national standard,” said show director John Wright.

“The judges thought the standard was very high indeed, it was a triumph for the show.”

In all there were 206 entries for last Thursday’s show at All Saints Church Hall, despite torrential rain just the day before, which spoilt shower’s flowers and caused problems for those planning to exhibit root vegetables.

But it was the chrysanths and dahlias that stole the show.

“People who came in to look just went quiet as they took their breath away,” said John, who won the Erna Simon Cup for fruit entries.

He was disappointed at the lack of any children’s section entries this year and hoped they would be encouraged to take part in next year’s spring, summer and autumn shows staged by the club.
