SCHOOLCHILDREN in Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary who took part in a green challenge this week can scoop a 10 book prize.

Devon County Council (DCC) this week asked pupils to walk to school as part of a region-wide bid to help children learn the route, promote independence and improve safety.

A special competition to mark Walk to School Week, which ends today, has encouraged youngsters keep a log of their journeys to school, describing their local area and why they enjoy their walking.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, DCC cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "There are so many benefits to walking, it reduces congestion, improves health and saves money. Hopefully the week will encourage some people to take up walking more regularly."

Competition entries must be submitted by May 31 to the Sustainable School Travel Team, Lucombe House, County Hall, Topsham Road, Exeter, EX2 4QW, or e-mailed to stplans@devon.gov.uk.
