BRANSOMBE Parish Council discussed removing the chains around the war memorial after it was reported that a man tripped over them last month
In the council's November meeting the issue was brought up after it was believed an elderly man tripped over them on Remembrance Day.
After writing to the Royal British Legion the council were told that the chains were not the legion's responsibility and therefore the parish council will decide on the best course of action regarding the chains.
The Royal British Legion said in a letter sent to the parish council that they had no objections to removing the chains as long as the area around the war memorial does not become a "picnicking area".
However Councillor Adlam commented: "My concern is if you remove the chains. It designates an area which is special and you wouldn't want anyone walking across it."
Councillor Newman said: "It delineates where a World War 1 memorial sits and to remove the chains would be a disgrace."
John Bass, chairman, said he would visit the site and report back at their next meeting. However the councillors said for the time being the chains should remain.
