Bridge to be replaced in Sidmouth

Work to last two weeks
SIDMOUTH’S well-trodden Livonia Footbridge will be replaced next week.
Work by Devon County Council (DCC) will begin on Monday and is expected to take a fortnight.
Temporary traffic lights will be set up in Sidford Road to provide pedestrians with a safe route while the footbridge is out of use.
“This scheme will provide us with a new, safer structure on this well-used route,” said Councillor Stuart Hughes, DCC’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, and the representative for Sidmouth and Sidford on the authority.
He added: “The old footbridge has basically reached the end of its practical use, so the opportunity is being taken to replace it as part of the county council’s routine maintenance programme.”
Manual traffic control will be used when a crane is on site to lift out the old bridge beams and to lift new ones into place.
DCC said this work will ‘most likely’ be carried out either late in the evening or early in the morning to minimise traffic disruption.
