SIDFORD Brownies prized mascot was rescued from a burning tower by firemen during their recent visit to Sidmouth fire station.

Thankfully the cuddly owl was unhurt during the demonstration and was returned safely to the 1st Sidford Brownies.

The exercise was part of an educational evening helping the girls towards their fire safety badge.

Fire fighter Sean Faulkner, a father of one of the brownies, talked to the girls about what causes fires, how to prevent them and what to do in the event of a fire.

He explained what happens when someone calls 999 and showed the girls how the message is passed down to the fire station.

The girls also had the chance to hold the hose and try on the firemen's specially designed helmets.

Whilst at the fire station two new brownies, Anna and Helen, aged 7, made their brownie promise and became official members of the group.

Nikki Chapman, Brownie Leader said: "The brownies really enjoyed their trip to the fire station.

"They especially loved the demonstration and were very relieved when our owl was saved from the fire!

"It is very satisfying to see the girls learning useful skills whilst having so much fun. "It was also great that Anna and Helen could make their promise at the fire station and I'm sure they will never forget that!
