Johannes Moser is the BSO’s artist in residence for this concert featuring music by Haydn, Grieg, Mozart and Jonathan Leshnoff
The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra comes to Sidmouth in May, with artist in residence Johannes Moser, the internationally renowned cellist, and Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association, Marta Gardoli?ska.
They will perform Haydn’s Cello Concerto, Grieg’s Holberg Suite, and Mozart’s Symphony no 29, as well as the world premiere of American composer Jonathan Leshnoff’s Suite for Cello, Timpani and Strings.
Haydn’s Cello Concerto was written with a wonderfully developed sense for what the cello can do, and shows that Haydn’s pleasure in odd phrase lengths and other rhythmic surprises was part of his musical personality from the beginning. Grieg’s Holberg Suite was composed for the piano, but re-orchestrated for the cello by Grieg himself. The Symphony no 29 was composed when Mozart was just 18 and is a fine specimen of gallant writing: poised, polite and faithful to the Viennese classical balance between grace and energy. Leshnoff’s music has been praised as ‘distinct from anything else that’s out there’.
The concert is at Sidmouth Parish Church on Thursday, May 2, at 7.30pm. Tickets £19, or £8.50 concessions.
