The Cancer Research UK’s Big Breakfast, in the Public Hall, kick-starts the Gala Week celebrations ahead of the official opening of the event.

Budleigh Journal editor Stefan Gordon has the honour of opening this year’s Gala Week and fete, as well as crowning the town’s royal family, on The Green.

The annual event is organised by the Budleigh Salterton Lions Club and funds raised throughout the week benefit a host of charities and good causes.

The Cats Protection League, RNLI, RSPCA, Cancer Research UK, the FORCE Cancer Charity and Fairlynch Museum, are some of the charities, organisations or clubs taking part this year.

With so much to see and do all week, the varied and family fun-packed programme of events for all ages includes workshops, competitions, live music, quizzes, a dog show, coffee mornings, parades, fancy-dress, art and crafts, a fun run and treasure hunt.

Gilbert Stephens Solicitors is sponsoring a pebble building competition on the beach at the start of the week.

Terry Bastyan, managing partner at Gilbert Stephens Solicitors, said: “Budleigh Gala Week is a local institution that we at Gilbert Stephens Solicitors believe is vital, not only for the charities it supports, but also for the life of the community in and around Budleigh.

“We are genuinely excited to be involved in the week and to help raise money for so many important causes.”

Many traders and businesses in Budleigh have joined in the fun with the 2018 ‘Spot the Stranger’ competition, with first prize of £25 going to the winner who solves the clues.

Budleigh Salterton Lions Club thanked all shops and premises who agreed to join in, displaying a number and a ‘stranger’ in their window display - an item not normally found in that shop.

The theme of the 2018 Gala Week is the ‘Life and Times of Sir Walter Raleigh’, marking the 400th anniversary of the death of East Devon’s best-known historical figure.

Programmes for Budleigh Gala Week, with a full list of events, times and locations, costs £1 and are available at outlets throughout the town.
