Burglars broke into a Sidmouth seafront eatery before dragging the heavy safe out overnight on Sunday, police say.
Mocha owner Graham Stout said the thieves gained access through the French windows on the Esplanade side of the premises and he has since changed his security procedures.
He said no money will be left in the café overnight in future and the next safe will be set in place with concrete.
The incident happened between Sunday evening and Monday morning.
