The captains of Sidmouth Golf Club’s men’s and ladies’ teams have tee’d off their respective tenures by uniting to support the Admiral Nurse appeal.

On Sunday, Ray Gunston and Angela Coles announced that the £100,000 campaign would be both sides’ charity of the year - as part of the club’s annual drive-in day.

The event marks the start of the new captains’ term in office.

Despite bad weather forcing the club to close the course, members were still able to raised more than £650 on the day through donations and an auction.

Angela said: “In the past they [the captains] have chosen separate charities, but we are trying to get the club to be one club. We talked together and decided we would join forces and have a club charity.

“We both said we wanted to support something local, that was quite important to us.

“We have read about the Admiral Nurse Campaign in the Sidmouth Herald, so we knew they were do.”

Ray said: “We are happy to support such a worthwhile charity and it was something that I was confident members would support.”

He also thanked sponsors Livery Dole of Exeter for their contribution to the charity day.

Rachel Johnstone, chairman of the Sid Valley Memory Café, and trustee Adrian Ford gave a short presentation during the event on Sunday. Rachel said: “It is going to be a fantastic to be working with the whole club, they are thrilled to be supporting a local charity.”

The club is planning a series of events to be held throughout the year. The campaign, run in partnership with the Herald, has raised £67,000 of its £100,000 target since its launch last May.

A Palm Court-style cream tea will be held in All Saints Church tomorrow (Saturday). The event has been organised by Alison Black and will run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Tickets are £3.50.
