A car crashed into an electricity pole in Ottery St Mary this morning (Monday).

The fire service was called to reports of a collision involving one vehicle on the B3174 at about 7.30am.

One engine attended and on arrival crews requested Western Power, police and ambulance to attend.

Firefighters made the vehicle safe and rendered first aid to the driver.

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesman said a man suffered a head injury and was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in an ambulance.

A Western Power spokeswoman added they were called to the scene this morning and found a pole had been knocked down by a car, bringing the nearby lines down.

She added no electricity customers were affected at the time but they did disconnected the power to eight homes at about 9am for safety reasons, while they carried out repairs and restrung the lines.

Power was returned to seven of the affected properties at about 9.50am and the remaining home will hopefully have its power reconnected soon, after repairs have been completely.

With Tropical Storm Ophelia expected to hit later today drivers have been reminded to take care on the roads.
