A passer by alerted the fire brigade at about 2am to the collision at Four Elms Hill, Newton Poppleford.

Two fire crews from Sidmouth and the rescue vehicle from Exmouth were sent to the incident. The police and an ambulance also attended the scene after the fire brigade informed them of the crash.

When the police arrived there was no one in the vehicle.

A police dog and handler searched the area because of concerns for the driver of the car but no one was found.

However a male is now helping police with their enquiries.
