Money which could help provide better support for Armed Forces personnel and veterans is coming to Devon.
A sum of £190,000 has been awarded to a group of councils, including Devon County Council along with authorities from Wiltshire, Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, Cornwall, Plymouth, and Torbay, from the MOD’s Armed Forces Covenant fund.
Devon County Council says a lack of familiarity with civilian services, and in some cases stigma, can make it hard for veterans and their families to access healthcare, find suitable housing, get a job or join social groups.
The council says the money will help ensure those who need help are known to support services.
NHS and council staff could get specialist training.
Councillor Roger Croad said: “More than 100,000 veterans live in Devon and as a nation we have a duty to ensure that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly.”
