‘Carnivalites’ from across the East Devon circuit have remembered a former Sidmouth Carnival organiser with a heart of gold, who has died at the age of 73.

Robin Waller, known as Rob, was the face of Exmouth’s annual celebration for decades, before he also took on Sidmouth’s.

His wife, Caroline, said: “Robin was a fantastic husband, father and grandfather. He was a loyal and faithful friend who loved to help people.

“He spent his life involved in the community as well as being a staunch supporter and fundraiser for various charities. He was a great man and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.”

News of Rob’s passing has attracted tributes from across the carnival community.

Stuart Hughes, who handed over the running of Sidmouth Carnival to Rob in 2009, said: “As well as having a heart of gold, he was one in a million, and to me he will always be carnival king.

“He was a lovely man and a great friend and will be sadly missed, but one thing’s for sure – if there’s a carnival to organise up there in heaven, then Robin will be there helping organise it.”

The Exmouth Carnival committee said: “The carnival community has lost one of its stalwarts and he will be greatly missed.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with his family.”

Budleigh Carnival Committee said: “Budleigh Salterton Carnival Club will miss their faithful friend very much.”

Budleigh’s carnival club is honouring Rob by sponsoring a trophy in his memory, to be awarded to the most entertaining local entry.
