A rising singer-songwriter wants to encourage her fans to feel comfortable in their own skin as she focuses her talents on a charity single.

All the proceeds from Clara Bond’s Porcelain will go to Skin Angels, whose aim is to help young people make informed decisions about skincare.

The Sidmouth-based 21-year-old has put out two EPs and is set to release her third. She is determined to make her voice heard in the music industry.

“I wanted to let people know what you look like is fine,” said Clara.

“You shouldn’t feel the need to change things about yourself.

“I was like that when I was 15 – asking how come I’m not six-feet tall and a bronze goddess?

“Porcelain is about loving who you are.”

Clara admitted she was naïve about skin cancer, not realising the damage the Sun’s rays can cause, before the Exeter-based charity got in touch.

“I wanted to say you don’t need a tan to be a 10 out of 10,” said the former Colyton Grammar student. “The most important thing is being healthy.”

Clara took her A-levels a year early to pursue her dream and has since worked with musicians who have written for the likes of Cheryl Cole, Tina Turner and the Sugababes.

Now she is focusing on writing for herself again, but she is up against the pressures of the music industry.

“Everyone’s saying what my music should sound like,” she said, adding that producers had tried to pigeonhole her as the next Avril Lavigne or Evanescence.

Clara is sticking to her guns and trying to retain control.

“I’m my own worst critic,” said the Convent Road resident. “I’m a perfectionist – I’ll never get to a point where I’m 100 per cent happy. I hear that’s totally normal.”

Clara currently splits her time between Sidmouth and London, but hopes to move to the capital full time by the end of the year.

“I need my Sidmouth,” she said. “It’s a different world here than when you get off the train at Waterloo.”

Porcelain is available on iTunes. Clara is due to perform at Artigiano in Exeter at 3pm on Sunday.
