THE Vision Group for Sidmouth has joined forces with EDDC to present an evening of discussion on climate change and its effects on the community.

East Devon District Council will host the free event at Knowle on Thursday, December 11, from 7pm, which includes the showing of The 11th Hour film, produced and presented by Leonardo Di Caprio.

There will be a chance for open debate with guest speakers Diane Berry, EDDC's carbon management programme officer, Lesley Smith of TravelWise and Ian Bateman, climate change officer for Devon County Council.

"We will be taking questions from the audience on issues raised by the film and will be discussing what can be done in Devon to mitigate against climate change, said Mrs Berry.

"EDDC is pleased to be supporting community initiatives such as the Vision for Sidmouth group, as action 'on the ground' is an important part of increasing awareness of climate change issues and to develop ideas for local projects."

Panel chairman is Councillor Paul Diviani, EDDC's chairman.

"Climate change is not something that can be dealt with by any one individual," said Mrs Berry, who said East Devon was fortunate to have a number of groups like the Vision Group, supporting the transition town initiative.

"It is by networking and coming together with events such as this that we hope to make a difference."

Vision Group secretary Jeremy Woodward, said of the film: "It tries to help us realise that we can all play a part, that we are not just insignificant dots in a huge and overwhelming global problem."

He thought it significant all levels of government saw issues on climate as a priority for forging policies for the future.

"The Vision Group is only too happy to work together in raising awareness of the ideas and practical steps that can be taken.

"This event is one such step in consulting and working with the community.

"The fact that we have Cllr Paul Diviani presiding over the evening is very significant, as it really shows the depth of commitment from local government, especially in the light of the announcement of proposed carbon emission targets from central government."

Admission is free although any donations will be given to local tree planting schemes.

Refreshments are available.
