JUBILEE: Branscombe Parish Council is looking for a co-ordinator to help organise the village celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Local organisations and clubs are being asked for ideas on how to mark the occasion in Branscombe and will present them at the parish council meeting on Thursday, February 23 at 5.30pm. A council spokesman said: “We desperately seek a person who will help the village organise this wonderful celebration.”

BARN DANCE: Branscombe Village Hall is hosting a barn dance with the Dartmoor Pixie Band on Saturday, March 17, from 8pm until 11pm. Tickets cost �9 for adults and �4.50 for children and include a ploughman’s supper. There will be a full bar and a raffle, and the tickets are available from Branscombe post office.

BOOK CLUB: The Beer Arts Group’s (BAGS) next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 28, in The Anchor Pub on Fore Street at 7pm. It will be a meeting of BAGS book club to discuss A Change of Climate by Hilary Mantel, and The Red Room by Nicci French.

SINGING: St Michael’s Church in Beer is holding a ‘Come and Sing Day’ on Saturday, May 12. Led by famous choral music composer John Rutter, guests will spend the day working on his music and ‘other music to make you smile’. Organisers say it will be: “A day that will inspire, and be a day to remember in the company of one of Britain’s most loved and prolific composers.” Registration is at 10am, and the event lasts from 11am until 5pm. Tickets cost �20 per person, which includes a �10 deposit for music hire which will be refunded at the end of the day. PRAYER: An event for the Women’s World Day of Prayer is being held at Beer Congregational Church on Fore Street in the village. The service, which is to pray for Malaysia, takes place on Friday, March 2, at 2pm in the church, with guest speaker Anne Stuckey. Men and children are invited as well as women, and refreshments will be provided.

LENT LUNCH: On Saturday, March 3, St Winifred’s Church in Branscombe will be holding a simple lunch to try and raise money for charity. The annual event will be in the Village Hall starts at noon.

STONE: Beer Parish Council wants to thank the residents in the village who have increased the use of local stone or uncovered more existing stonework on their buildings in recent years. It hopes this is another example of where the Village Design Statement is having an impact on improving design and emphasizing the uniqueness of Beer, its traditions and geology on the Jurassic Coast.
