Crash! Bang! Kapow! A young artistic duo have tag-teamed to battle monsters and villains in their own comic, created to raise money for their new school.
The Herald previously reported on a campaign launched by the PTFA at Newton Poppleford Primary School to raise £10,000.
The village’s new £3million school is set to open in September, but up to £30,000 is needed to help pay for vital supplies and furniture.
Parents, teachers, children and friends of the school have been going the extra mile and have so far raised £8,350 - only £1,650 off their target for the school year.
Two pupils, both aged eight, have produced a comic which has been on sale in the playground and has raised more than £80. A further £600 was also handed over to headteacher Stuart Vaughan by members of the Sidmouth Lions Club.
Lions president Mike Sycamore, 1st vice-president Alex Blyth and longest-serving member Roger Keynock presented the cheque. The money will be spent on bookshelves needed for the new library and classrooms. At the same presentation, Isaac Thomas, from Newton Poppleford Cricket Club, also presented the school with £200.
Parents also clubbed together and ran cake sales at work, while a group of 14 pupils from year six took part in a sponsored 16-mile walk for the Exmoor Challenge. As well as this, a significant pledge of support has also been made by the Norman Family Trust, which will be spent on the new hall stage and lighting area.
A parent and teacher 10km run in March raised £3,976 towards the total. Children throughout the school have also signed themselves up for a number of sponsored events including a ‘readathon and run’. A dance event will also be held at the annual school fete to raise money on June 29 between 4.45pm to 7pm on the playing fields in Back Lane. There will be a bouncy castles, a bird show, new stalls and a grand community raffle with more than 32 prizes on offer.
Mum-of-two Emma Finch, from West Hill, who is spearheading the PTFA drive, said: “We would like to thank everyone who has supported the fundraising so far. What has been achieved has been amazing, but we still have a long way to go to raise the estimated £30,000 needed to equip the new school properly.”
