SIDMOUTH Parish Church is the venue for a concert on Saturday, September 11 to promote the Sidmouth Music concert series.

Clarinettist and saxophonist Chris Gradwell and pianist and organist Andrew Daldorph, are combining forces for the event. They will open with JS Bach - Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C major, BWV 564 - followed by Schumann’s Three Fantasy Pieces, and Mendelssohn’s Sonata no 3 in A major, both for clarinet and piano.

This will be followed by three works by British composers. Gerald Finzi’s Prelude, followed by the Allegro agitato from Charles Villiers Stanford’s Three Intermezzi. Stanford, as well as composing himself, was teacher and inspiration for several other English composers. Completing the trio will be Allegro con brio from Malcolm Arnold, whose compositions ranged from symphonies and ballets to music for brass band and film scores, including the music for Bridge over the River Kwai. To close the first half Andrew will provide another organ piece, entitled Sortie, by French organist and composer Louis James Alfred Lefbre-Wely.

The second half brings jazz. It will open with George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, written under pressure in 1925 to be ready for a Paul Whiteman concert in New York. It turned out to be the highlight of the concert.

Thereafter the programme will be a surprise to all but there is the possibility of a special guest taking the stage.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets priced 8 - including a glass of wine during the interval - are available from Paragon Books in High Street. Further information on the Sidmouth Music season, running October to March, will be available on the night. The season is also the subject of an exhibition in the town’s library.
